The Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos was voted by passengers as the Best Airport in South Europe for 2018 and won the Skytrax World Airport Award, according to the world’s largest annual air travellers’ satisfaction survey.
This year, the awards were based on the answers to special questionnaires completed by 13.73 million air travellers of more than 100 nationalities in 550 airports across the world and they were filled in from August 2017 to February 2018. The results of this survey on passenger satisfaction were recently announced and they involved a wide range of airport services and products such as ckeck-in, arrivals, transfers, shops, security etc.
This was the second important distinction awarded to Eleftherios Venizelos airport in the space of a month; on March 6, this year’s ASQ (Airport Service Quality) Awards were announced by the Airports Council International – ACI World, and the Athens International Airport (AIA) ranked first in Europe in its category (15 – 25 million passengers). Across the world, these awards are a standard for measuring and depicting passenger satisfaction as they are the outcome of evaluation of 34 basic efficiency indicators in airport services and products. The ASQ programme includes 74% of the busiest airports globally and passenger opinions are recorded on their flight day. In 2017, 343 airports in 84 countries participated in the programme.
These distinctions are a reward to the airport of the Greek capital by passengers, following the investment programme implemented in recent years for the airport’s aesthetic, operational and commercial upgrading.
During 2018’s first quarter, the international passenger traffic in Eleftherios Venizelos airport saw a 15.9% dramatic rise (2,712,003 arrivals and departures) compared to last year’s respective period. The overall passenger traffic had an 8% increase (4,009,005 arrivals and departures), and this fact alone points to a certain tourism boom for 2018 in Greece.
